1931

Geelong bounced back from losing the 1930 grand final to Collingwood to take out its second league premiership. With the VFL using the McIntyre finals system for the first time, Geelong needed the double chance it got for finishing first after the home and away campaign.

Geelong won 15 of 18 games and edged Richmond out of first place on percentage. The Tigers took the second semi-final by 33 points, before Geelong won a thrilling preliminary final against Carlton by six points.

The first half of the grand final was close, with Geelong leading by seven points at half time. The third quarter was the key, as Geelong booted 3.5 to the Tigers one goal. Armed with a 24 point lead at the last change, Geelong ran out 20 point victors.
