A sixth flag came in 1963, and it marked the only time the Cats had taken the premiership after not being in first place after the home and away season. Hawthorn edged Geelong out of the minor premiership on percentage after both clubs finished 13-4-1. Ironically, had Geelong lost rather than drawn with the Hawks during the home and away season, they would have missed the finals all together!
The Cats prevailed over Hawthorn in the second semi by 19 points and were far too good on grand final day. Geelong’s six goal final term saw them home, with Polly Farmer dominant.
