The 2009 season marked Brenton’s third as an assistant coach with the Cats as Geelong returned to the grand final. The season also marked his 14th campaign at Skilled Stadium, where he spent 11 years and 199 games as a player.

Sanderson spent the 2006 season as development coach at Port Adelaide, ironically it was the Power that Geelong defeated to take the 2007 flag.

He was charged with working with the Power’s young players, with four of them breaking through to earn rising star nominations in 2006.

PLAYING CAREER

Brenton Sanderson played 199 of his 209 AFL games at Geelong and was one of the most respected players in club history.

He began his career with the Adelaide Crows after earning All Australian under 17 honours. He played just six games in two seasons with the Crows before being traded to Collingwood. Sanderson managed four games at Victoria before a trade to Geelong.

Sanderson enjoyed an outstanding 11 years with the Cats, winning the best & fairest in 2001 and finishing third in 1998, 2000 and 2003, was named club vice-captain, and represented Australia against Ireland in the international rules series in 2001.

Before embarking on his AFL career Sanderson played 55 games with Sturt and represented South Australia.

Overall Sanderson played 209 games and kicked 34 goals.
