DAVID Wojcinski isn't too sure why the Cats came out of the blocks slowly against Melbourne, but he's happy to bank the four premiership points and move on.
"I don't know what happened there. We just didn’t come out and play the right way and Melbourne hurt us," Wojcinski said.
"They've got nothing to lose when they come out and play against one of the top sides. They came out firing and we probably just weren't ready for it.
"We didn't play our best footy, but to Melbourne's credit, they came out and played really hard footy.
"In the second half we got back to basics and played the way that we should play."
Most Cats fans didn't get the Geelong performance they were expecting against the young Demons, especially early, but Wojcinski said coach Mark Thompson did not need to rev up his troops at the first break.
"We don't have to be yelled at now," he said.
"We know when we're playing well and when we're playing bad. It's something that we can fix ourselves. Occasionally he comes in and gets into us a little bit, but most of the time it's us that can fix it up."
The workman-like performance probably won't make it into too many video libraries, but the Cats did set a new record for possessions in a single match with 498.
"I don't know if that's a good thing or not," Wojcinski said.
"Sometimes it can be a bad thing. I guess it comes down to the opposition's pressure sometimes … if they keep forcing you back. It's not something we set out to break.
"Possessions don't really mean much to us. It's not about who kicks the goals or who gets all the possessions. It's about playing as a team for us."
A wry smile crossed the defender's face when quizzed about his team's poor conversion rate in front of goal which yielded 21 behinds.
"Go and ask a forward. Don’t ask me I didn't have any set shots," he said laughing.
"It can hurt a bit when you try so hard to get the ball into the forward line and they miss some easy ones, but we don't blame people or anything like that. It can just happen like that sometimes."
