Geelong has been handed a 51 point defeat by Richmond in the second preseason hit out of the year.
Richmond held the Cats goalless in the second and third quarters to record the easy win. The Cats managed just seven behinds in the 50 minutes of football and missed a number of gettable shots as Richmond pulled away.
The match was played in front of around 5,000 spectators at the picturesque Yea reserve. The contest started in a lacklustre fashion before both teams registered goals.
Brad Ottens and Darren Milburn started forward and played most of the game inside 50.
Adam Varcoe booted Geelong’s first with an effort off the ground in the goal square, while David Wojcinksi provided the highlight of the day with a great running goal late in the quarter.
The Cats squandered four solid scoring chances early in the second term, and when Richmond booted three late goals the margin swelled from four points to 24 at the long break.
The third quarter was more of the same, and by three quarter time Richmond had extended the lead to 54 points.
Travis Varcoe finally broke through for a goal early in the final quarter but the game was well and truly out of reach at that point. Chapman, Jesse Stringer, and James Podsiadly (2) added late goals for the Cats but it was too little too late.
Geelong’s veterans such as Corey Enright, Jimmy Bartel and Chapman had plenty of the ball in a good sign ahead of the home and away season. Stringer and Allen Christensen were the best of the first year brigade, and Stringer capped his performance with a fine running goal late in the game.
