Captains still rate Cats

Nicolaas Kuyt 2:49 PM Thu 18 March, 2010
The AFL's club captains still believe the Cats will be a threat come finals time in 2010.

The 16 club captains each voted on categories including which seven other clubs do you think will make finals, which other team will make the grand final and who do you think will win this year's Brownlow medal, Coleman medal and NAB Rising Star.

All but one AFL captain said that the Cats would make the finals in 2010. Every captain said that the Bulldogs, Magpies and Saints would be in the top 8 come September.

When asked which other team would meet them in the Grand Final three captains said it would be the Cats lined up against them. Six captains believed that the Saints would be there opponent and six said it would be the Bulldogs. One thought that Pies would break through for their first grand final since 2003.

Three captains thought Gary Ablett would register back to back Brownlow medals and two thought his fellow onballer Joel Selwood would be the AFL's best player in just his fourth year.

No Cats registered votes in the Coleman medal and NAB Rising Star categories with new Lion Brendan Fevola topping the Coleman medal voting with five and Eagle Nic Naitanui and Roo Jack Ziebell getting the nod for NAB Rising Star with five each.

The sixteen AFL captains are Simon Goodwin (Adelaide), Jonathon Brown (Brisbane), Chris Judd (Carlton), Nick Maxwell (Collingwood), Jobe Watson (Essendon), Matthew Pavlich (Fremantle), Cameron Ling (Geelong), Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn), James McDonald (Melbourne), Brent Harvey (North Melbourne), Dominic Cassisi (Port Adelaide), Chris Newman (Richmond), Nick Reiwoldt (St Kilda), Brett Kirk (Sydney), Darren Glass (West Coast) and Brad Johnson (Western Bulldogs).
